For establishing these criterion, the standard qualifications, the curriculum being studied and and the college degree subject material are used as foundation.
These tests are based on many criterion including Professional knowledge, and the examination for Professional Knowledge consists of 100 written multiple choice questions and also written responses. The AEPA also include examinations testing the applicants knowledge of the Constitutions of the United States and Arizona. Also, Administrative test, comprising supervisor tests and Superintendent and principal assesments are a part of the assessment. The assessment also comprises of a examination of Subject Knowledge, which have 100 multiple choice questions and also written response questions. Language assessment tests for German, French or SPanish have 55 multiple choice questions and one written choice question with a spoken portion. A basic skills examination also forms a part of the assessment and includes 42 multiple choice questions on math and comprehension. This test also assesses writing skills.

All os the exam questions may not count toward the result as some questions are part of the test for trial, to check if they can be included in future tests. The minimum passing score is 240.

It is well known the these exams are tough to crack. It is not uncommon for candidates with even deep and thorough knowledge to fail. Also, candidates who fail the first time usually opt to give the exams a second time. Candidates should study thoroughly and make sure sufficient time is devoted towards study. Candidates can also refer to exam study guide or study using exam flashcards so that weakness in the preparations may be identified and adequate attention to that particular area is given.
